Qingdao Family Travelers with Lots of Luggage: How Does Junaiyue Handle Vehicle Capacity Planning?

Family group luggage never sounds like much on the phone, but open the trunk and the story unfolds. For a family of four with two adults and two children, the luggage reported is three cases, but what actually shows up is three cases plus one stroller plus one backpack plus two snack bags. When Junaiyue does Vehicle Capacity Planning, assigning vehicles from the reported numbers would go wrong half the time, so we calculate by the peak, not by the number spoken on the phone.

First, the peak, and what it really includes. The moment of most luggage in a trip is usually the return leg: three cases on arrival, still three cases when leaving, stuffed with seafood and beer, plus two shopping bags on the outside and a stuffed toy carried by the child. The vehicle is assigned for the departure moment, and what does not fit is the return moment. That is the standard script for family group luggage failure. Junaiyue tells guests this script, and they will report two extra pieces on their own. Those two extra pieces are the margin.

The Luggage List, One Piece at a Time

When Junaiyue checks a family booking, luggage falls into four types: hard cases, soft bags, baby gear, and loose bags. For hard cases we ask the size, because the difference between 26 inch and 28 inch is not just a few centimeters, it is whether the case stands upright in the trunk. Soft bags are easy to stuff and slip into any gap, so they are not a worry. Baby gear is listed separately: a folded stroller still takes the room of a medium case, and child seats are reported in advance so the driver installs them early. Loose bags are the easiest to forget to report, things like shopping bags, cooler bags and small backpacks of toys for the children. On the return leg they are the main force in the trunk.

1.5 pieces per person is the baseline, and for family groups Junaiyue counts two pieces per person. A family of four is sized on the standard capacity of eight pieces: better to have an empty slot than a squeezed ride. Some guests think we overcount. I say it up front: a vehicle assigned for eight pieces loaded with six is roomy, while a vehicle assigned for six loaded with eight is misery. The money differs little, the experience differs a lot. Over the years, the family groups Junaiyue has assigned on this standard have needed on site rework for luggage only a handful of times.

There is a trick to reporting luggage: giving the count plus sizes beats giving the count alone. Three 22 inch cases and two 28 inch cases are the same count but a whole class apart in loading. When Junaiyue dispatch takes a family booking it asks one extra question about how big the cases are, and if guests find that a bother we simply calculate on the larger case, preferring too much over too little.

How to Assign Vehicles for Families with Strollers and Many Cases

For families with children under one, the stroller is usually a full size non folding model, and that basically starts at a 7-seat GL8, with one side of the second row folded so it can lie flat. For two children and two strollers, go straight to a 9-seat light van and fold the rear seats down into one flat surface. Junaiyue drivers have a habit when loading strollers: wheels inward, handle outward, so it pulls out in one motion on arrival and the child does not wait in the parking lot. Child seat fittings are checked in advance too, whether a fixed anchor or a seatbelt mount, so the driver carries the right parts and no one is scrambling on site.

Families with many cases are common among long stay guests and those moving between cities. One family stayed a week in Qingdao, then moved on to Weihai before heading home, with eight cases and two strollers. Qingdao to Weihai is 280 km and about 2.5 hours, and we assigned a 15-seat minibus so they could sit anywhere, with one layer of cases and one layer of strollers in the trunk and not a single bag left by their legs the whole way. The guest later said the best part of the trip was that nobody argued about the cases.

Multi generation family groups are another calculation. Which vehicle the seniors ride in and which one the child seats go in are settled together when splitting the group. For three generation bookings, Junaiyue often suggests splitting into two vehicles: one at a slower pace for the seniors and one that covers more ground for the younger guests, meeting back at the hotel in the evening. Luggage travels with the people, and the loading in each vehicle actually stays cleaner, far more comfortable than crowding a dozen pieces into one large vehicle. Splitting vehicles does not split the family, the two drivers stay in touch as before, and by the evening meet up the child is often already asleep in the car and just needs carrying to the room.

| Family makeup | Peak luggage estimate | Suggested vehicle | Notes |

|---|---|---|---|

| 2 adults, 2 children, one stroller, one case | 6 to 8 pieces plus one stroller | 7-seat GL8 | One side of the second row folded for the stroller |

| Family of four with two strollers and two cases | 8 to 10 pieces plus two strollers | 9-seat light van | Rear seats folded into a flat surface |

| Three generations, 5 to 7 people | Over 10 pieces, many large cases | 15-seat minibus | Spare seats hold the loose bags |

| Long stay or city move with many cases | Around 12 pieces | 15-seat minibus or split into two vehicles | Luggage does not compete with people for seats |

| Winter family travel | Two pieces per person | Move up one class | Thick coats take up capacity |

The Peak of Shopping Bags Only Shows on the Return Leg

Seafood gift boxes, canned or bagged beer, dried seafood: the specialties of Qingdao are worth buying in quantity. For a family group heading to the airport on the return leg, a trunk twice as full as on arrival is normal. Junaiyue handles this in two ways. One is to reserve the vehicle class for the return peak. The other is to offer storage for bulky items mid trip, shipping cases ahead during the second half so only bags at hand stay in the car. Guests often combine the two, and the heavy luggage days become light right away. Junaiyue has standing arrangements with several courier points, the driver handles the paperwork for storage, and guests can scan a code to track the shipment.

There is a system for arranging shopping bags too. Soft gift boxes go at the bottom, seafood that must not be crushed goes on top, and beer is secured separately in a mesh net so it makes no noise during hard braking. Junaiyue writes these rules into the mentoring handbook for new drivers, and they are tested on the third day.

One reminder about liquids like beer: glass bottled shipments have restrictions, and the driver secures them separately in a mesh net when loading so they do not tip over on the road. Guests may not notice these small moves, but when they do they always say it was thoughtful.

Storage is priced per piece, a few CNY a day, cheaper than moving up a class, and the more luggage guests have the more we recommend it first. Junaiyue has done the math: for family bookings of four days or more, storage plus a standard vehicle saves over 20 percent compared with hauling a large vehicle the whole trip. Guests get the comparison numbers and choose for themselves. The money saved buys a couple of jin of good tea, guests are happy, and we are glad to do business that saves money.
