There used to be a whiteboard on the dispatch office wall covered with where every car was going each day. To an outsider it looks like a tangle. What we read is another layer: which car is running empty between which two jobs. Guests never hear the phrase empty runs, yet it sits inside the cost of every intercity booking. When Junaiyue Travel does Route Optimization, half the effort goes into keeping cars loaded and the other half into making the empty stretch shorter.
There is a booking from mid September that makes a good example. Three guests went one way from Qingdao to Yantai to catch a ferry, not returning to Qingdao. In theory the return is over 200 km completely empty, so the quote is either high enough to make the guest frown or the fleet eats the cost. Junaiyue Travel looks at that booking inside the whole fleet schedule for the day rather than on its own.
Empty running is not one thing, it is four. Positioning before pickup, when the driver drives from the garage to the guest door. The empty return after drop off, when the car comes back at the end of a trip. The gap between jobs, the distance moved between the end of one booking and the start of the next. And waiting, the false empty run, where the car sits still but the driver hours drain away. Each source has a different fix, and lumping them together makes the conversation impossible.
| Source of empty run | Where it appears | How Junaiyue Travel handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning before pickup | Garage to pickup point | Dispatch from nearby, zone based scheduling |
| Empty return after drop off | Drop off point back to base | Find a return booking in the same direction, or fold it into the next day |
| Gap between jobs | Movement between two bookings | Pair bookings on the same corridor |
| Waiting loss | Car parked, driver idle | Chain the waiting into available time slots |
For that Yantai ferry run, we found a group in the schedule heading back toward Qingdao from Yantai that afternoon, an hour and a half apart. The ferry car waited an extra ninety minutes in Yantai, picked up the return booking, and the return went from totally empty to full. Both sets of guests got quotes noticeably lower than a straight run. This kind of pairing does not happen every day. When it does, it is a real saving, and when it does not, the quote in the guest hands is unaffected, because the cost of the empty return was inside the whole segment price all along.
Positioning before pickup is the easiest kind to control. Junaiyue Travel divides central Qingdao into zones and gives city bookings first to cars already in that zone that day, so a car finishes a hotel pickup and goes straight to the next point instead of crossing the whole city for a few kilometers. Zone scheduling looks simple, but what it saves is real mileage.
Positioning on intercity jobs is handled with a corridor mindset. Qingdao to Weihai, Yantai and Penglai are the three main corridors. Bookings on the same corridor are lined up for the same car back to back, so the car carries passengers both ways and only the ends are empty. When a corridor has no bookings, the car picks up a nearby city job to fill the gap rather than idling at an expressway entrance.
Waiting is the hardest to manage because most waiting is not our doing. Flights are delayed, guests shop longer than planned, and the car simply sits. What Junaiyue Travel can do is mark the waiting windows in advance. The duty dispatcher keeps a live sheet showing which car will be idle where and for how long, so nearby short notice jobs can be slotted in when possible. If not, the car rests properly and the driver grabs a meal in the gap.
Beyond zones there is also the time slice. Morning airport pickups cluster between nine and eleven, and afternoon city jobs start after two. When dispatching, Junaiyue Travel leaves the gap between those slices for intercity cars returning through the city. A returning car takes one city job on the way, which turns empty kilometers into loaded ones. This method demands a lot from dispatch, but once it lines up the whole fleet turns like meshed gears. The hours our schedulers spend at the whiteboard each morning go mostly into that meshing. Get one day to line up and the whole day runs smoothly, and that is also why Junaiyue Travel intercity quotes can stay competitive.
The Peninsula geography naturally suits a loop. Qingdao, Weihai, Yantai and Penglai form a ring. Guests travel the loop and the car follows, loaded on the way out and loaded on the way back, leaving only the short stretch out of the garage as a true empty run. When Junaiyue Travel plans a multi city itinerary, a loop is the default backbone whenever the guest schedule allows. Avoiding backtracking saves not only fuel but a whole block of time.
Sometimes a loop does not fit. If the guest only travels one way and only lands in Weihai, the empty return has to be absorbed by a return booking. Return bookings cannot be forced. The Junaiyue Travel position is to find one if we can, and if we cannot, the guest is never charged beyond the leg they ride. The quoting policy is written out clearly. What the guest pays matches the road they travel. Empty returns are a fleet business matter, not a guest cost matter.
For multi vehicle groups, the loop can be optimized one level further. A group of over twenty split across two cars travels the same line outbound, then on the return one car takes the loop and picks up passengers from another segment while the other wraps up nearby, so neither car carries much empty mileage. This split depends on dispatch knowing the whole day of bookings, able to say off the top of the head which car is free in which window.
Guests often ask what all this talk about empty runs has to do with them. It shows up in the quote. A fleet with a low empty run rate quotes a lower price for the same itinerary, or the same price buys a better car. After years of working on zoning, corridors and loops, Junaiyue Travel intercity quotes are far more comfortable than they used to be. That did not come from cutting service. It came from efficiency on the road.
Efficiency also matters for the drivers. Fewer empty runs mean less wasted working time on the road, more quality bookings for the same shifts, steadier income and more care for the vehicle. Good car condition and steady drivers are what guest experience stands on, and that chain starts with running fewer empty cars.
That said, empty runs can never go to zero. A fleet has to keep some slack for emergencies, with a car ready to go at any time for a delayed flight. That empty drive is a cost of service and worth paying. The Junaiyue Travel approach is efficiency in normal times and responsiveness in a pinch, keeping the two ledgers separate so efficiency never eats into service.
